Baptism (sometimes called Christening) is the way in which we welcome children and adults into the Christian faith, as a member of the world-wide Church. They usually take place during our Sunday morning 10.30 service, or at 4pm during our Sunday afternoon Explore service. There is no charge for baptism, although we do take a collection at the service.
If you would like your child to be baptised, please get in touch with the Parish Office. They will explain what happens in more detail, but, briefly, we ask you to attend a Thanksgiving service with your child(ren) at which we thank God for the gift of your child(ren). This is so that you and your family can feel more relaxed as you will have a better idea of what it is all about. we encourage you to bring your godparents, if possible.
The choice of godparents is an important part of baptism. Godparents must be baptised and people you feel will support your child in their journey of life and faith. People normally choose three godparents.
If you have not been baptised as a child, and would now like to be baptised we will very pleased to discuss this with you. We will normally invite you to join one of our enquirers’ groups and to come along to our services and get involved with the rest of our church family. Do please get in touch with the Parish Office, or speak to one of the clergy after a service.
What baptism means
Baptism marks the beginning of a journey with God which continues for the rest of our lives, the first step in response to God’s love. It is a joyful moment when we rejoice in what God has done for us in Christ, making serious promises and declaring our Christian faith. The wider community of the local church and friends welcome the newly baptised, promising support and prayer for the future. Hearing and doing these things provides an opportunity to remember our own baptism and reflect on the progress made on that journey, which is now to be shared with this new member of the Church.
Baptism is the first step in the Christian journey and we are here to support you (and your child) on the further steps of that journey. We welcome you to join us in our services and groups as part of that journey of faith.
